New! Cancer Screening Benefit

Beginning October 1, 2026, SASMI will be offering eligible members the opportunity to get a free Cancer Screening test from Cancerguard.

If you’re a SASMI member (or dependent spouse) aged 50 or older, you may want to talk to your healthcare provider about the Cancerguard test. Cancerguard is a multi-cancer early detection (MCED) blood test. It looks for cancer-related signals in your blood, including: 

• DNA methylation patterns (chemical changes to DNA that can indicate cancer)
• Protein biomarkers
• Other biological signals associated with cancer cells

The test is designed to detect signals from more than 50 cancer types and subtypes from a single blood draw. It is not intended to replace guideline-recommended screening for breast, cervical, colorectal, prostate, and lung (high-risk) cancer.

How It Works

This test is available to eligible SASMI members and their spouses who are aged 50 or older. If you meet the requirements and would like a screening, follow these steps:

1. Talk with your healthcare provider about whether a cancer screening test like Cancerguard is right for you.
2. Log in to the member portal and request a review of your eligibility for the Cancer Screening Benefit.
3. SASMI will review your request and determine your eligibility for the benefit. If you are eligible, you will get another email from SASMI with a registration code to use in step 5. If you are not eligible, SASMI will let you know why.
4. Visit the Cancerguard website and click/tap “Request Cancerguard.” You’ll have to answer a few questions and enter the code you were sent by SASMI in the second email.
5. Cancerguard will mail you a cancer-screening kit via US mail and provide you with options to schedule a blood draw. The blood draw is covered at 100% as part of this benefit.
6. Your blood work will be sent back to Cancerguard. They’ll send you the results, but they’ll send SASMI the bill. (SASMI does not receive the results.)
7. SASMI pays the full cost for the screening.

Results are typically available within about two weeks and should be reviewed with your healthcare provider. Note that both false positive and false negative results may occur. Additional tests may be required. Cancerguard’s dedicated care navigators are available to help patients on next steps.
